Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition leader VD Satheesan here on Friday demanded minister R Bindu to withdraw her remarks on the protest held before Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank by the relatives of the depositor, who died recently, and urged her to tender an apology to the deceased’s family.
Philomena, a former government employee who had deposited Rs 30 lakh in the bank, died on Tuesday after failing to get the money back for her treatment. The deceased’s family members claimed that the bank arrogantly denied money even when they pleaded with them that it was for treatment. The family took Philomenas’ dead body to the bank and protested in front of its premises. It even made it to the national headlines.
Reacting to this, minister Bindu, at a media conference, briefed on the measures taken by the bank to address the demand raised by Philomena and termed the family’s protest politically motivated. The bank is in her constituency, Irinjalakuda.
Later, the family members refuted Bindu’s claims and said that they received money only after protests.
Opposition leader Satheesan said that “what happened in Karuvannur is the problem of our system and we are the accused." According to him, a person who represents the government should not have portrayed their protest in an insulting manner. The minister should withdraw her remarks completely and should apologise, he said.
