Samastha demands centre to refrain from raising legal age for women’s marriage
Malappuram: Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama meeting has requested the central government to refrain from plans to increase the legal age of marriage for women. The Muslim association has warned that raising the age of women’s marriage from 18 to 21 will lead to cultural degradation in society.
“Increasing the age of marriage for women from 18 to 21 will destroy our culture and values. Apart from this, the decision will deny the physical and mental needs of the girls and their fundamental rights," observed leaders of Samastha.
The meeting of the association also pointed out that the decision to raise the legal age of women’s marriage is unscientific as most of the countries, including developed nations, have fixed 16 to 18 as the legal age for women’s marriage.
The association also decided to coordinate with various political, religious and cultural groups and forward a memorandum to the centre seeking to withdraw from the move to increase the legal age for women’s marriage.
