Sale of fruits goes up despite price increase during Ramadan
Malappuram: As the Ramadan and fasting season has begun; the sale and price of fruits have increased in the district. Compared to the previous week, Rs 10 to Rs 20 increaae in price of many fruits was reported.
The main item in the Ramadan market is mango. People demand for mango varieties like Sindhooram, Neelam, Benganappally and Mallika which ranges from Rs 50 – Rs 60 per kg. Another most demanded variety is Brutkal which is imported from Egypt and Turkey. The price of Brutkal which costs Rs 80 the previous week is now at Rs 100 – 110.
Shabir, a wholesaler in Kunnummal, said that increase in price has not affected the sale. Last year during this time, Nipah virus infection hit the market. But this year, things are favourable, said Shabir.
Like all times, there is demand for apple, watermelon and grapes. Although, there is tension about the availability of watermelon, at present it is sufficiently available for sale. It comes from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Watermelon which was only Rs 16-18 in the previous week costs now Rs 20 -25/kg.
Orange costs Rs 80 per kg, apple Rs 160-200 and grapes Rs 50 -100.
