Kottayam: The land survey conducted by Louis Berger, an international consultancy company based in the US, for Sabarimala airport has been completed. The survey and study were conducted in the Cheruvally estate allotted by the government for the new airport. The survey lasted for almost a month.
The runway alignment of the airport will be decided after getting the detailed survey and study reports.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation had earlier granted in-principle approval to conduct studies for airport construction. The Aviation Directorate raised several questions and returned the preliminary survey report and the plan submitted by Louis Berger. The primary response was given for these questions and Louis Berger was also asked to conduct a detailed study.
The directorate raised questions like - Will the mountainous terrain be suitable for the project; Is constructing runway in such a terrain practical; Will there be a problem of tabletop runway and so on. Kerala has made it clear in the primary response that the area does not have large hills and that there is no possibility of floods in this land.
