Kozhikode: The Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) under the state government has given administrative sanction for land acquisition for the Runway and Safety Area (RSA) development of Kozhikode International Airport.
The nod is for land acquisition in the Pallikkal and Nediyiruppu village panchayats. 14.5 acres of land need to be acquired.
Once the revenue department provides nod, survey-related process can be initiated. At first, a notification under Section 6(1) of the Kerala Survey and Boundaries Act 1961 need to be issued. Deputy collector entitled with land acquisition is the authority which will issue this notification.
Meanwhile, the state government has to sanction Rs 50 lakhs for land acquisition process. The quotation from authorised agencies will be accepted for environmental impact study. One agency will be given permission for the study after review of quotations. The agency need to complete the study within the given time and submit report. Once that is over, land acquisition process will start.
The state government is planning to complete the land acquisition by March 31, 2023. The procedures are expected to be cleared within a short span of time.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) banned operation of big aircrafts after the crash of Air India Express in 2020. As per the directions of DGCA, there should be a 240 m-long Runway and Safety Area (RSA) on both ends of the runway. While the existing RSA is only 90 m-long.
