Running bus catches fire in Ponkunnam


St.Thomas Bus which takes service on Kottayam-Nedumkandam route caught fire near Thachara Bharat Petrol pump around 5.45 pm on Thursday.

Kottayam: In a shocking incident, a private bus plying on KK Road at Ponkunnam caught fire on Thursday. Finding smoke and fire from the engine, the bus was stopped and passengers evacuated immediately.

After dousing the fire, the bus driver restarted it to shift the vehicle from the spot. Unfortunately, the bus caught fire again when it crossed 100 metres. Later, Fire Force personnel rushed to the spot to extinguish the fire.

St.Thomas bus which takes service on Kottayam-Nedumkandam route caught fire near Thachara Bharat Petrol pump around 5.45 pm on Thursday. The incident took place when the bus was heading towards Nedumkandam from Ponkunnam bus stand.

People panicked as the petrol pump was just 20 metres away from the burning bus.

Employees from the petrol pump took extinguishers to douse the fire on the bus. The employees namely Manoj M Nair, Manu George, Nandu and VS Ratheesh extinguished the fire before the fire force personnel arrived.

Traffic on KK Road was interrupted for more than 30 minutes due to the incident.
