Thiruvananthapuram: Transport Secretary Biju Prabhakar directed the Road Transport Officers (RTOs) in the state to take strict action against illegal private buses carrying services on routes assigned for KSRTC.

He warned that RTO officials would be held accountable if they failed to take legal action against private buses conducting illegal services. Earlier, there were reports that RTO officials are keeping a blind eye towards illegal bus services.

Meanwhile, Transport Commissioner S Sreejith is handed one month's time to submit a report regarding action taken by RTO officials over complaints received over illegal private bus services.

Last week, the government suspended Kollam RTO D Mahesh for not taking legal action against a private bus that conducted illegal service between Oyoor and Ernakulam. Following this, RTOs in the state observed a protest on social media in support of the suspended officer.

Currently, only KSRTC buses are permitted to conduct services on longer routes. However, several private buses are conducting illegal services on these routes by flouting norms. As a result, KSRTC estimates a loss of Rs 30 crores per month.
