RSS nod to candidature of Kummanam, Surendran in assembly bypolls
Thiruvananthapuram: Veteran leader Kummanam Rajasekharan and BJP general secretary K. Surendran will be fielded as BJP candidate in the byelection to Vattiyoorkavu and Konni assembly constituencies respectively. Both were staying away from the candidate selection but the decision changed after RSS agreed to field them.
The shortlist of candidates to four constituencies is submitted before the BJP national unit. If BDJS is not willing to contest from Aroor, BJP will take over the seat. BJP has already selected a young leader as candidate for Aroor considering the community equations.
The troubles started after RSS did not initiate to make Kummanam a candidate, after his failure in Lok Sabha polls. When LDF fielded Thiruvananthapuram mayor V. K. Prashanth in Vattiyoorkavu and UDF fixed former MLA K. Mohan Kumar as their candidate, BJP decided they should also field a strong candidate.
BJP is sure of Kummanam’s victory in Vattiyoorkavu as he came second in both Lok Sabha and assembly elections. His vote difference with UDF was narrow in Lok Sabha polls. This influenced RSS to take a favourable stand. Kummanam’s name was added in the list of possible candidates after seeking his consent.
K. Surendran was considered in the beginning itself due to his excellent performance in Pathanamthitta in the Lok Sabha polls. But Surendran was not willing to contest as he was eyeing the post of party state president. Shobha Surendran was considered as candidate until he gave consent.
