Kollam: The state committee of the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) is likely to see a change in leadership soon. The party’s present state secretary AA Aziz has expressed desire to step down.
According to party sources, former minister Shibu Baby John will take over as RSP’s new state secretary next month.
Apparently, demands for a change in party leadership were raised in the RSP state-level meeting in October as well as in the constituency and district-level meetings held earlier.
However, veteran leader AA Aziz was elected to the post after he expressed interest to become secretary for one more time. Also, Shibu refrained from contesting the election.
It is learnt that criticisms are rife within the party for failing to strongly declare its stance in state and national politics. There are demands to fix an age limit for the party’s office-bearers too.
According to those rooting for Shibu Baby John, he will be able to lead the party better.
Meanwhile, a two-member committee has been appointed to study the party’s by-law amendment and fix age limits for office-bearers. However, there have been no further talks in this regard.
Shibu Baby John had earlier served as state secretary of RSP (Bolshevik) and became a minister in the UDF government. He was instrumental in bringing RSP to the UDF as well. Soon after, RSP and RSP(B) merged together.
Although Shibu had been planning to take a break from active politics following the defeat in the last Assembly polls, party leaders convinced him otherwise.
