Rs 600 cr worth drugs seized in state within 6 months
Kochi: In a shocking information, the excise department has seized Rs 700 crore worth intoxicants in the state till October this year. Of this, drugs worth Rs 600 crore were seized within the last six months.
The excise department seizes drugs worth Rs 3 crore every day. It is shocking that the use of drugs in the state is much more than the figures detected by the authorities. Recently, the excise officers had seized Rs 200 crore worth MDMA drug from Kochi which was brought to be smuggled to Malaysia.
Cases are charged as per the NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Act and strict punishment is awarded only if drugs are kept in possession for more than the stipulated quantity. If the quantity is low, the person will be released on bail. The drug smugglers are utilising this loophole.
Around Rs 100 crore worth drugs were seized in 2016 which doubled the next year. An increase of 350 percent was detected in 2018 compared to the previous year. 6314 cases were registered so far this year which was 5946 in the previous year.
In 2017, 6226 persons were nabbed in connection with drug cases whereas 6504 persons were nabbed so far this year. Though there is not much increase in the number of culprits, a huge difference is spotted in the smuggled intoxicants. This is because the same culprits shift to smuggling of modern expensive drugs.
It is learnt that even online sale of drugs using cryptocurrency has become common. When the drug mafia attain expertise in modern technologies, the excise department fails to keep up with them.
The excise officials are compelled to depend on the police force to track the location and get other details, which in turn slow down chasing the international rackets in the field. The implementation of intelligence system and excise shadow police helps to seize more illegal drugs.
The huge leap in the figures in drug cases is due to the increase in the new generation intoxicants, said Divisional Deputy Excise Commissioner A. S. Ranjith. Also the strict checking of excise department through various strategies resulted in the huge figure of drug cases, he added.
