Rs 1.12 cr paid for 362 personal staff directly appointed by ministers and chief whip

Kochi: While the state is struggling financially, 362 personal staff were directly appointed by 21 ministers and the chief whip of the state government. The minimum amount required to pay them as salary is about Rs 1.12 crore per month. Further, 14 personal staff was appointed by the opposition leader directly. Additionally, individuals are appointed on a deputation basis to the personal staff from various government departments.

The details of the appointment came out after the public administration department gave a reply to MK Haridas, an RTI activist. Further, the information on appointments he received was up to November 30, 2021. It is unclear how many appointments were made since then.

The Private Secretary and the Additional Private Secretary are the highest earners with a pay scale between Rs 1,07,800-1,60,000. It is also worth noting that the staff cook has a salary scale of Rs 23,000-50,200. There are also travel and medical allowances in addition to this salary.

Personal staff members are entitled to a pension if they have served for two years and one day. The government had also directed that the number of personal staff members of the Leader of the Opposition should be fixed at last year's figure.
