Alappuzha: Rough seas wrecked havoc on five houses in Ambalapuzha region on Alappuzha coast on Thursday. The region lying in Ambalapuzha North Grama Panchayat was witnessing turbulent seas since Wednesday, putting residents on their toes. Several houses were partially damaged and a few destroyed completely, said reports.

According to locals, they have been urging the government to construct a sea wall at 300 metre distance from the sea. However, authorities have not taken any proactive action, they alleged.

Many in the region have already lost their houses to the raging sea. The seas have encroached 100 m-stretch in some areas, said locals. Many houses are waterlogged.

The government had announced the construction of groyne (pulimutt) and sea wall worth Rs 43 crore. Months have passed, but construction works are yet to begin.
