Thiruvananthapuram: After weeks of uncertainty, the Tamil Nadu government approved the opening of the shutters of the Mullaperiyar dam.

The shutters would be raised at 7 AM on Friday depending upon the water level and the amount of water flowing into the dam.

Meantime, Minister for Water Resources Roshi Augustine stated that the state is fully prepared to face the development.

Earlier today, Roshi Augustine said that the state government stands with the demand for a new dam at Mullaperiyar. He said he could not accept the oversight committee's position that there was no need to change the water level. The current water level in Mullaperiyar is 137.75 feet. The current water flow into the dam is 3800 cubic feet per second. Tamil Nadu takes 2300 cubic feet per second.

"The water level in Idukki dam has been reduced. It can withstand the flow of water that is released through the spillway of Mullaperiyar dam. However, it is also a worrying that the water level in Mullaperiyar has now risen more than what was earlier expected. The state expressed this concern before the oversight committee," he added. The minister also assured the people that they need not to worry about the dam as the government has taken all necessary steps.
