Road washed away in landslide; traffic disrupted on Thalassery-Mysuru route
Kannur: An inter-State road connecting Kerala and Karnataka was washed away in the landslide that occurred in the forest region in Karnataka and Iritty.
The road was completely washed away at Makkoottam which lies near the border. As a result, the traffic on the route was completely disrupted.
The road passing through Makkoottam was the main road that connected Thalassery and Iritty regions with the cities of Mysuru and Bengaluru.
As the traffic was disrupted along the road, the vehicles going to Mysuru are now going through Mananthavady.
The falling of trees following the landslide also resulted in the disruption of traffic. The traffic on this route was completely disrupted by around 9 pm yesterday after the road got submerged in the heavy rains.
Locals, police and fire force personnel rescued hundreds of people who were stranded in the road. As the region including Makkoottam is still submerged in water, the traffic on the route is not yet restored.
Apart from this, five houses were destroyed in the landslides that occurred in Brahmagiri forest region and Ayyankunnu in Iritty.
Eight families have been shifted to a temporary relief camp at Kiliyanthara school. Acres of agricultural land have been destroyed.
