Road test not needed for license renewal, rules eased till March 31
Thiruvananthapuram: One does not have to show their driving skills in order to renew their driving license. However, this concession is valid only till March 31. The Central government announced easing of rules following the request made by the State government. The road test will be exempted for those who apply for license renewal within five years of license expiry.
Following the new regulation by the Union government, renewal laws for license were made stricter. As per the new regulation, one could renew the license within one year after license expiry, after payment of a fine. After one year, road test was mandatory. After five years, one has to secure the learner’s license again.
Minister AK Saseendran had said that implementing newly regulated license scheme was not possible in a state that had plenty of Non Resident Indians. He wrote to Union Miniser Nitin Gadkari citing this. The exemption was made by the Central government following this letter. The transport secretary has written to the transport commissioner in this regard.
