Road race death in Thrissur: Thar driver was drunk and was speeding at 120km/hr

Thar that was involved in accident, Ravishankar

Thrissur: The CCTV visuals of the road race between a Mahindra Thar SUV and a BMW car that resulted in an accident and the death of a taxi passenger suggests the accused violated multiple rules.

The Thar was speeding at 120 km/hr on the road which has a speed limit of 60km/hr. En route, he drank liquor with friends at a party. He drove the vehicle despite being inebriated and involved in the race with the BMW car when it overtook his vehicle at Kuttoor.

The race between a Thar and BMW led to the death of one person after the SUV rammed into the taxi the victim was travelling in. The person who died in the accident was Padukad native Ravishankar (67).

An officer of the Viyyur police station said Ravishankar’s wife, daughter and granddaughter as well as the taxi driver also suffered injuries and are presently undergoing treatment. The officer also said that the drivers of the Thar and the BMW have been taken into custody and alcohol was detected in the blood of the former. Police said two separate FIRs - one for causing death and another for causing injuries - would be registered after inquest proceedings are completed.

Meanwhile, the victim's wife told a TV channel that the accident happened suddenly. She said that as she was pulled out of the taxi and her husband, who was sitting in the front seat, was not moving and locals were saying that the jeep was travelling at a very high speed. The taxi driver told the TV channel that after the BMW went past them at high speed, he heard another vehicle approaching fast and therefore, he stopped the car and moved it to a side of the road. Despite that, the speeding Thar rammed into the taxi, he claimed.

Visuals captured by onlookers showed locals detaining the Thar driver after the accident. Police said that the BMW had sped away from the area, but was later identified based on CCTV footage of the area.

The police have intimated the Motor Vehicle Department to revoke Thar driver's licence. Similarly, the police have summoned the BMW owner on Saturday. It is learnt that a Kunnakulam native is the owner of BMW. The cops found that the BMW used to travel at a high speed. The two others who accompanied the Thar driver in the vehicle are booked under the charges for abetment.
