Thrissur: The wholesale price of all rice varieties witnessed Rs 10 hike during the last two months on the back of reduced supply from nearby states. Usually if the price of matta variety increases, then the price of vella variety reduce in tandem. However, the trend has apparently changed. Interestingly, ponni variety has not shown an increasing trend.

Kerala depend on nearby states for rice. Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are the major suppliers. The price hike has been attributed to reduced supply, stocking and exports to crisis-hit Sri Lanka. On the other hand, GST has also resulted in price hike. Meanwhile, traders in Kerala have increased the quantity of rice stocked for Onam season.

According to Rice Mill Owners’ Association estimates, the yearly rice consumption of the state is nearly 40 lakh ton. 16 lakh ton has been distributed through ration shops. In that six lakh ton is sourced from the state itself through Supplyco. While 24 lakh ton has been distributed through wholesale markets.
