Rice-loving wild jumbo vandalises ration shop in Idukki once again

The ration shop

Idukki: A rogue wild jumbo named Arikompan, having a notorious track record of vandalising and raiding ration shops in Santhanpara, once again put the locals on their toes on Friday.

According to locals, Arikompan vandalised the ration shop at Panniyar Estate in the early morning hours on Friday. The elephant reportedly fled from the scene only after hearing their noises. The elephant could not get anything as food items were shifted to other locations.

This is apparently the fourth episode in the last 10 days, where the elephant attacked the ration shop. Also, in the last 60 months, the region has witnessed 11 such episodes.

Arikompan’s modus operandi is vandalising sides of ration shops and taking out sacks of rice. It will have the rice and return to the forest. The jumbo as of now has not attacked any individuals, but repeated episodes have people in panic.

A forest watcher was killed in a wild elephant attack on Wednesday in the same region.

The locals have been urging authorities concerned to resolve such issues but to no avail.
