"There are many cemeteries in isolated areas. Why do they want to bury the body inside this crematorium which is situated in a residential area?” the people questioned emotionally.

Kottayam: Residents of Muttambalam here on Sunday prevented cremation of the body of a COVID-19 victim inside the municipal crematorium. The people are staging a protest in front of the crematorium blocking the entrance.

The deceased named Ouseph George, who was under treatment for the virus, breathed his last on Sunday morning. The officials decided to cremate his body inside the municipal crematorium in Muttambalam as per COVID-19 protocol.

However, the decision to cremate the body of a COVID victim in a residential area without their knowledge provoked the residents. “The people are protesting as they are worried about the spread of the virus,” said the councillor from Muttambalam.

The people questioned the decision to cremate Ouseph George’s body inside the municipal crematorium instead of burying it inside the church’s cemetery.

"There are many cemeteries in isolated areas. Why do they want to cremate the body inside this crematorium which is situated in a residential area?” the people questioned emotionally.

Police force is camping in the area and the officials are trying to pacify the protesting people.
