Rescue by fisherfolk successful; 4 fishermen missing from Vizhinjam return home
Thiruvananthapuram: The four fishermen who went missing after they ventured into the sea for fishing from Vizhinjam harbour returned safely here on Saturday. It is reported that they returned to the harbour in the same fishing boat in which they set off to the sea.
The fishermen, namely - Yesudasan, Antony, Louis and Benny had ventured into the sea on Wednesday. They were expected to return on Thursday. Other fishermen demanded to search for them as they did not return even on Friday.
Meanwhile, it is also alleged that the authorities were not vigilant to take action to trace the fishermen. The fishermen got stranded in the sea after their boat’s engine developed a technical snag. They returned home exhausted and were taken to a hospital.
From Saturday morning, Coast Guard’s helicopter and Dornier planes were engaged in the search operation. Fishermen in 10 boats went in search of the missing men and were successful in locating them.
Fisherfolk said that the missing men returned due to the grace of the Mother of the Sea and alleged that the authorities did not do anything to rescue them.
In Neendakara in Kollam, a group of six fishermen from Kanyakumari who ventured into the sea were reported missing. Their boat capsized and sank due to rough seas. Three managed to swim to safety. Search is on to find the missing fishermen.
