Kochi: Passengers can now drive home in cars rented from railway stations. The ‘Rent a Car’ program of Southern Railways is being implemented in Kerala. This will be introduced in four stations under Thiruvananthapuram division on an experimental basis. Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam South, Ernakulam North, Thrissur are the selected stations.
There will be five cars each in every station. The vehicle will have to be returned to the specified place within the specified time. The kiosk to book the car will be set up in the railway station. Online booking facility is also under consideration. Indus Go is the company that has been entrusted with the implementation of the scheme.
Thiruvananthapuram Divisional Commercial Manager M Balamurali said that if the experiment becomes a success, this will be expanded to other stations as well. This way, the railways can generate an income of Rs. 3.5 lakhs from the license fees category alone. Earlier, ‘Rent a Bike’ scheme was introduced in Chengannur during the Sabarimala season.
