Renowned Carnatic musician Mavelikkara P Subramaniam passes away

Mavelikkara P Subramaniam

Tripunithura: Renowned Carnatic musician Prof Mavelikkara P Subramaniam passed away here on Tuesday. He was 66.

Subramaniam was trained under famous musicians Mavelikkara R Prabhakara Varma and Kumara Kerala Varma. He had stints at RLV College Of Music And Fine Arts, Tripunithura and All India Radio.

He has received laurels like Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi award, its fellowship and Samgeetha Poornasree prize of Poornathrayi Foundation.

He is master to artistes Madras TV Jayachandran, Kester, Vaikom Vijayalakshmi, V Gopalakrishnan, Lekha R Nair, Chithra Arun and Sudeepkumar.

Subramaniam is son of musician-couple Pathnabha Iyyar and Mavelikkara Ponnamal. He married Dhanalakhsmi and Harishankar, Ravishankar are their sons.

He has donated his body to Ernakulam Medicial College and has mentioned in his will to completely avoid religious rites.
