Kozhikode: Muslim Youth League state general secretary P K Firoz said that if any religious leaders justified Higher Education Minister K T Jaleel, who was interrogated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the gold smuggling case, they also should be suspected.

A serious allegation was raised against Jaleel that he smuggled gold under the guise of Quran. When he was about to be caught, he used the Quran as a shield. The religious leaders should not support this, Firoz said in a press meet.

Jaleel is requesting help from religious leaders claiming that the opposition is asking for his resignation because he brought the Quran. Jaleel is trying to destroy evidence, Firoz alleged.

When the allegation arose, the minister claimed that the Qurans were safely kept at Edappal and Alathiyoor and they were not distributed. But later, when a difference in the weight of the parcels was detected, he told in an interview given to a journalist that 24 copies were handed over to the staff at C-apt.

The officials are being pressured to state that they took the copies. The minister held a meeting with C-apt MD and former MD early on Monday morning. It should be probed if this was an attempt to destroy evidence, Firoz demanded.

Also, it should be checked if the packets that arrived from UAE were the ones sent to Malappuram. The order issued on Friday to transfer the C-apt staff immediately is also mysterious. This could be an attempt to destroy evidence. If Jaleel continues as minister, all evidence would be destroyed. He should not continue as minister any more, Firoz said.
