Thiruvananathapuram: After weeks of protest and uncertainty, salaries were finally disbursed to KSRTC drivers and conductors on Friday. The salary was paid using an overdraft of Rs 50 crore from SBI based on Rs 20 crore sanctioned by the state government on Friday.
53 crore is needed to pay the salary of these employees. However, the amount sanctioned by the state government hasn't reached the account of KSRTC. The remaining employees will be paid after this amount is credited in the bank.
The salary was paid using Rs 50 crore handed over by the state government on two different occasions and the bank overdraft. The overdraft for April was paid back using Rs 30 crore in financial aid provided by the government in the first week of May.
It is worth noting that revenue generation for April was Rs 164.71 crore compared to the operating cost of Rs 251.21 crore. To avoid this, KSRTC was asked to implement multiple reforms than to find solace in taking loans and demanding financial aid.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the problems in KSRTC can only be solved by bringing structural reforms.
