Relatives and local residents protesting in front of the children's home in Kakkanad

Kochi: Relatives along with local residents staged a protest alleging mystery over the death of a girl who was under the care of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).

The CWC had taken custody of the girl after she was sexually abused. Alleging mystery over her death, local residents staged a protest in front of children’s home at Kakkanad. The protesters sought a detailed investigation into the girl’s death.

The 14-year-old died under mysterious circumstances the other day. She was sheltered at an establishment under the CWC at Pachalam.

Meanwhile, the CWC officials said that she was suffering from fever and other ailments and that there was no mystery behind her death.

The girl was sexually abused two years ago. As her mother was out of station, the CWC took responsibility of the child. She died at a time when the trial in the sexual abuse case was about to start. This triggered suspicion among relatives and local residents. They alleged that the officials did not inform anyone.

After post mortem at the Kalamassery Medical College, the body was taken to the children’s home in Kakkanad in an ambulance. However, the residents staged protest and prevented the body from being taken out of the ambulance.

Meanwhile, the police said that there was no mystery behind the girl’s death. An unnatural death case has been registered following the complaint.
