Recommendation to give coupons instead of food kits
Kollam: The Kerala Civil Supply Officers Association has recommended providing coupons of the same value to ration card holders instead of food kits.
The association has sent a petition to the Chief Minister and Minister for Food. The petition stated that by providing coupons instead of food kits, Rs 16 to Rs 20 crore can be saved in distribution expenses.
The Onam food kit distribution has not been completed yet. The government has decided to provide food kits for four more months. But Supplyco is yet to start procuring items to prepare the kits. If coupons are provided, there will not be any complaints regarding the quality of items in the kit. It will relieve civil supplies staff of psychological strain.
If coupons are provided, the customers can buy groceries or medicines from Supplyco outlets. It will also increase the sales in Supplyco. Coupons will also prevent delay in distribution due to unavailability of items in the kit. Moreover, those who have the financial resources can return the coupons and help the government, the petition pointed out.
Many innocent employees are under the shadow of doubt after vigilance raids revealed lack of quality and quantity in the food kits, said Kerala Civil Supply Officers Association state president B. Padmakumar.
Citing lapses, the distributors were only banned for a month. As the ban ends, they will be able to take part in the tender process, he said. “So, who will care for the people if they are to consume items that have proved to be inadequate in quantity and harmful for health?” Padmakumar asked.
