Rains wreak havoc in north Kerala; 6-year-old girl killed in Wayanad as tree falls on house
Kozhikode: North Kerala received heavy rains since Tuesday night resulting in widespread damages. Rains accompanied by strong winds started around 11.30 pm.
In Wayanad, a 6-year-old girl died after a tree was uprooted in the rain and fell over their house. The deceased was identified as Jyothika, daughter of Babu, a resident of Valad. Babu was seriously injured.
In Kannur, a tree fell on top of a moving car injuring the passengers. The incident took place near the fire and rescue station in Kannur. Fire and Rescue officials rescued the passengers and took them to a hospital.
Uprooted trees damaged three houses in Kannur district. Five persons were injured in these incidents. A huge tree fell across the National Highway at Mele Chovva disrupting traffic for several hours. On information, police came to the spot and rerouted the vehicles.
Power supply was disrupted in many areas as uprooted trees fell on power lines. Roofs of many shops in Kannur city were blown away by strong winds.
In Kozhikode, most of the damages were reported in the city. Trees were uprooted in Puthiyangadi, East Hill guest house, Kamburam, Kovoor, Malikkadavu, Karuvissery and Bypass areas. Power supply and road traffic were also disrupted in these areas.
Low lying areas in Kozhikode city were inundated. Coastal erosion was also reported in the district.
