Kannur: The works aimed at increasing the speed of the trains in Kerala have begun. The tracks will be renovated to increase the maximum speed of trains up to 130 kmph. As many as 53 railway routes are selected in the country for revamping, of which two routes fall in Kerala. Thiruvananthapuram- Kozhikode railway route (400 km) and Kannur- Kozhikode route (89 km) are considered for the works in the state.

The guards on the Chalakudy railway bridge were changed on Thursday as part of the maintenance works. The maintenance works are progressing on the 301 km-long Thiruvananthapuram- Madurai route also.

According to the report of the railway engineering wing, the slowest route in the state is the Shoranur- Ernakulam route. Hence, a new railway track has to be constructed here. However, in the first phase, methods, including the construction of a loop line will be carried out.

The railway has decided to implement an automatic signalling system to let more than one train pass through between two consecutive stations at a time. By this, other train services will not have to be halted during the service of the Vande Bharat Express.
