Kollam: The Nagercoil-Kottayam Express, often criticized for running late consistently, will have a revised schedule from January 2 onwards to benefit passengers.

Currently, the train leaves for Kottayam from Thiruvananthapuram at 2:30 PM. However, the train is often halted at many places, including Kochuveli station, to allow Chennai mail and Jan Shatabdi to pass. Following this, the train reaches Kollam only after two and a half hours before making its onward journey at 5 PM.

The students and the daily commuters were suffering as a result of repeated delays and uncertainty surrounding the running time. Passengers suggested that a lot of time could be saved if the train begins its journey from Thiruvananthapuram after the departure of Chennai Mail.

The train leaving Thiruvananthapuram at 2.40 PM is halted at Kochuveli station for a long time. Alternatively, passengers travelling from Thiruvananthapuram to Kottayam will benefit more if the train departs at 3.15 PM.

According to the new timetable, the train from Paravur takes one hour to reach Kollam.

Passengers demanded that the Railways should also consider changing the timings of the Veraval-Thiruvananthapuram Central Express, Bhavnagar Kochuveli Express and Ganganagar Kochuveli Express trains.

Recently, the importance of the Kochuveli station has increased with the many development activities in the area. The number of people arriving at the station also increased. Several central and state offices, private institutions, factories and hospitals are located near the station premises.
