R Sreelekha becomes first woman to be promoted as DGP in Kerala
Thiruvananthapuram: The first lady IPS officer in Kerala R Sreelekha has become the first woman to be promoted to DGP rank. Sreelekha who is an Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) presently, has been promoted to the rank of Director General of Police (DGP) of fire services. R Sreelekha and N Shankar Reddy are promoted to DGP rank as veteran DGPs Jacob Thomas and A Hemachandran are retiring soon.
Sreelekha is an IPS officer of 1987 batch. She joined the police force after working as a college teacher and an employee of the Reserve Bank. She had served as the District Police Chief of Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta and Thrissur districts, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in Ernakulam and also worked in Kochi and New Delhi offices of the CBI.
Sreelekha served as the managing director of the public sector companies like Rubber Marketing Federation and Roads and Bridges Corporation also. She was also appointed as Crime Branch IG, Vigilance Director, Intelligence ADGP, DGP of Prisons and Transport Commissioner. She was the investigating officer of major cases like Praveen murder case, Kilimanoor case and irregularities in Consumer Fed.
Earlier, Thiruvananthapuram native Jeeja Madhavan had served as DGP in Karnataka. She was the first woman to be appointed in DGP rank in South India.
