Pinarayi shares his 1996-experience on question over Riyas' remark on contractors

“In 1996 when I was the electricity minister, an MLA visited me with a contractor,” Pinarayi said in his press conference on Wednesday. “I told him right away that this is not his job. MLA shall not bring a contractor to a minister.”

Thiruvananthapuram: While answering a question over the controversy associated with the remarks of PWD Minister PA Mohammed Riyas on MLAs recommending contractors, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan shared one of his experiences from 1996.

“In 1996 when I was the electricity minister, an MLA visited me with a contractor,” Pinarayi said in his press conference on Wednesday. “I told him right away that this is not his job. MLA shall not bring a contractor to a minister.”

There is no difference of opinion in this matter in CPM, he claimed. This has been the party stand for a long time, he inferred. However, he did not react to the criticism of CPM MLAs over the minister’s statement.

On October 7, Riyas said in the assembly that the practice of contractors meeting a minister with other contractors or with the recommendation of MLAs is not fair as it may lead to issues later.

However, party MLAs opined that such statements will create a negative image about legislators among public. The criticism was raised first by Thalassery MLA AN Shamseer.
