Wayanad: Pulpally resident Rajendran Nair (60), the complainant in the Pulpally co-operative bank fraud case allegedly ended his life by consuming poison. He was found dead in the fields of his neighbor. The Congress-led administrative body of the bank has come under severe criticism over the incident.
As per the bank records, Rajendran Nair has taken a loan of Rs 25 lakhs by pledging land. However, Rajendran had said that all he had ever borrowed from the bank was a meager amount of Rs 80,000. The helpless farmer had no clue how his loan amount at the bank rose to Rs 25 lakhs.
Locals alleged that the loan in the name of the deceased farmer at the bank, has now risen to a staggering Rs 40 lakhs, including interest.
In the wake of the tragic death of the farmer, serious allegations are now being leveled against the bank. Another resident recalled how he had pledged the title deed of his land at the bank for Rs 2 lakhs for renovating his house. “It was not even a loan, now the bank is demanding a payback of Rs 60 lakhs including the interest. Can anyone explain it to me, it's outrageous,” he said.
A governing body under the leadership of former KPCC general secretary K K Abraham had come into power at the bank in the year 2017.
Allegations of corruption amounting to crores of rupees were leveled against the board members, and several protests were organized against them. The bank allegedly cheated several customers by procuring their title deeds.
Discrepancies of up to 8.5 crores were detected at the bank upon investigation.
