Pulikali preparations in full swing in Thrissur
Thrissur: Preparations for Pulikali, a procession of dancers painted like tigers, are in the final stages.
The event, which marks the end of Onam festivities in the state, is scheduled to begin at the Swaraj ground here at 4 pm. It is traditionally held on the fourth Onam day.
Men will have their bodies and faces painted like tigers and is done with oil paints. The tigers will play hide and seek with a hunter wielding a gun. This time, the procession will feature 'female' tigers too.
If the pulikali teams fail to comply with the time schedule, they will be barred from the competition. The assessment will be held at Paramekkavu, M O Road and Naduvilaan. A team will have 35 to 51 tigers in it.
Around 500 police personnel will be deployed to arrange security for the event. Apart from this, each team will have an SI and 10 police personnel. A medical team under the District Medical Officer will be stationed in the area.
A fireworks display will be held at 9 pm at Thekkinkadu. Traffic will be strictly regulated in and around Thrissur town as part of pulikali.
