Professor manhandled by Kozhikode hypermarket staff; Friend’s statement comes to light
Kozhikode: In connection with the incident in which a professor was manhandled and robbed by the staff of Grand Fresh hypermarket at Focus Mall near Mofussil bus stand here, the statement of his friend has come to light. His friend Lijesh said the professor was forcefully subjected to body checking and about Rs 1 lakh withdrawn using his ATM card in three swipes.
Prashant Gupta, professor of Gorakhpur National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology, was accused of theft and was brutally beaten up by the hypermarket staff on Wednesday. The professor happened to walk out of the shop amid shopping as his phone rang. As he was holding a packet of lipsticks at the time, the staff accused him of stealing and started manhandling him.
Prashant Gupta requested them to call the police but the 8-member gang continued to harass him. Gupta who came to the shop by 5.30 pm was allowed to leave only after 7.30 pm. In addition to the torture, they also threatened him to circulate his photo through social media if he failed to bring Rs 2 lakh at their office in Eranhipalam.
Lijesh said that they would have destroyed the evidences if the police had not reached soon. Kasaba SI Sajith and team arrived at the spot and caught the culprits in no time. Other accused also will be caught soon, he added. The professor’s wedding ring and Rs 7000 snatched by the hypermarket staff and the records of withdrawing the money through swiping were collected by the police.
