Kannur: The jail department’s recommendation to increase the daily wages of prisoners working in certain sections in the prison has been submitted to the government. This will benefit about 200 prisoners working in the food manufacturing section.
The wages for the prisoners vary from Rs 69 to Rs 170 as per the work. The wage of Rs 169 is recommended to be increased to Rs 200. The wage increase is implemented including the jobs like chapati and biryani making in skilled work category. The government has received a profit of about Rs 6 crore from the chapati units in prisons in the past 5 years. The units sell the products at 60 percent discount than the market price.
There are also plans to start new ventures in the prisons. The jobs will be expanded to more new categories like cafeteria and petrol pump in addition to the chapati making units. This is observed to be beneficial for the prisoners to get a better job or to find a self-employment, when they are released after their jail term.
