Priests on hunger strike against Cardinal George Alencherry
Kochi: A group of dissident priests of the Syro Malabar Church are staging a hunger strike against Cardinal George Alencherry seeking his removal from the responsibility of Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese.
The dissenting priests, who are staging the hunger strike at the Bishop House here, alleged that the Cardinal was accused in 14 cases and must not be allowed to continue in charge of Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese.
Cardinal George Alencherry was reinstated as the chief of Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese recently. A group of priests were against this move. It must be noted that two inquiry reports regarding the controversial church land deals involving Cardinal Alencherry have been submitted to the Vatican.
Cardinal Alencherry was again given the responsibility of Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese at a time where there has not been any action regarding the land deals. The protesting priests want George Alencherry to step down from the position of Cardinal.
Cardinal Alencherry had called a meeting of forane priests on Thursday. During the meeting, a group of priests came protesting and held talks with the Cardinal. The priests said that the Cardinal’s answers were not satisfactory and decided to stage the protest. As part of the protest, the priests will refrain from functions in the church.
On learning about the protest at the Bishop House, a group of priests supporting Cardinal George Alencherry came to the spot. Following this, police came to the spot to avoid law and order problems and any untoward incidents.
