Power, water to be disconnected by this evening; Flat owners seek more time
Kochi: The time to vacate the Maradu flats which was ordered to be demolished by the Supreme Court will end on Thursday. The government had rejected the residents request for more time to vacate the flats and set the October 3 deadline to be adhered as it amounts to contempt of court.
The water and electricity connection which was restored temporarily for their relocation would be severed by Thursday evening. But the inmates demand more time to vacate the flats.
District authorities said that the 138-day action plan to demolish the flats will be followed and if the residents refuse to move out, they may have to face legal consequences.
The flat inmates wanted houses similar to the ones they were living and are demanding this. But the district authorities said they could provide alternative places only for their temporary rehabilitation. The authorities made it clear that accommodation facilities must be found by the flat owners themselves.
Fort Kochi sub collector Snehil Kumar visited the flats on Wednesday evening to oversee the eviction process.
