Postmen in Kerala to act as ‘mobile ATMs’; can withdraw upto Rs 10,000 a day
Kochi/Thiruvananthapuram: The 7196 postmen in the state will be acting as mobile ATMs from now on. A new system that allows money withdrawal and balance checking from Aaadhaar-linked bank account or post office payment bank through postmen has been implemented.
Though this scheme, one can withdraw upto Rs 10,000 a day and also deposit money. The only requirement is a post office payment bank account. The facility to withdraw money without going to bank or ATM counter is enabled through Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS).
The postmen will be given ‘Micro ATM’ of the postal department, a mobile phone and a biometric equipment. AEPS functions completely based on biometric information without entering any username or password. Among the total 10,600 postmen under Kerala circle, 7196 are prepared to provide the new service.
The services can be availed at the post offices also. If the service is used when postman arrives at house, a small fee will be charged. The facility is available at 4742 among the 5064 post offices in the state. AEPS is functioning parallel to the postal department’s payment bank India Post Payment Bank (IPPB).
The new system will be helpful for those who are not familiar with online transactions and those who cannot go to banks. It also integrates the service of multiple banks in a single platform. Those who do not have postal savings bank account also can use AEPS services.
One can use the AEPS after entering the account number, mobile number, Aadhaar number and QR code in Aadhaar card in the postman’s mobile app. The procedures can be completed only if biometric details are entered.
Once the required money is entered, the postman will hand over the amount to the person. The account holder will receive an SMS showing the amount is debited from his/her account.
