Popular racer and 'car doctor' Darius Marshall passes away in Kozhikode

Kozhikode: Popular high speed car racer and automobile engineer Darius Marshall passed away on Thursday at his residence here in Jayanthi Nagar. He was 90. He was undergoing treatment for cancer.

Marshall was the head of a Parsi family in Kozhikode and the National Veteran Rifle Shooting champion for 15 years. He has also served as Rotary District Governor, district president of the Billiards and Snooker Association, president of the Beach Club among others.

He also bagged first place in All India High Speed Car Racing in 1959, participated in the All India Motor Rally six times and conducted a car rally continuously for 24 hours. The veteran racer rebuilt a few schools damaged in the Gujarat earthquake.

He is survived by his wife Katy Marshall and children. The funeral will be held on Friday at 9.30 am at the cemetery near Parsi Fire Temple ‘Anjuman Baguh’ at SM Street, Kozhikode.

Adieu to ‘Car Doctor’

Darius Marshall was often referred to as ‘Car Doctor’ for his rare talent at identifying cars’ problems easily. People from Thrissur to Mangalapuram used to bring their cars for repair at his ‘Auto Motto’ workshop in Customs Road.

A philanthropist by nature, Marshall has donated around 17,000 USD for the Rotary Foundation. He has also served as president of Trauma Care Society and Calicut Boat Club.
