Malappuram: Popular folk singer TK Ummar died here on Sunday. He collapsed while performing at Poonthanam Day celebrations event held near Poonthanam Temple. He was soon rushed to a private hospital in Perinthalmanna, but could not be saved.

The demise of Ummar, who was an active presence in the field of art and culture, has deeply saddened the residents of the area. “He (Ummar) used to come and sing in all events regardless of party politics,” opined local residents.

Apparently, Ummar had arrived at the event with the desire of singing two of his favourite songs. However, he collapsed while singing the first song ‘Pathinalaam Raavudichathu’ from the movie ‘Maram’.

Ummar had been running a ration shop in Poonthanam. The funeral was held at 1 pm Poonthanam Juma Masjid on Sunday.
