Thiruvananthapuram: Vigilance department conducted surprise raids across Kerala to evaluate the condition of roads repaired during the last six months. The move comes at a time when the poor condition of roads is in limelight over the death of a motorist in Ernakulam.

The officials deployed equipment to collect samples from the road to evaluate quality. It is learnt that the officials identified unscientific works in some regions.

Apart from the condition of roads, the officials also examined documents such as copies of bills submitted by contractors and the contract details. The surprise raids were conducted as part of Operation Saral Rastha-2.

It may be noted that the vigilance earlier had received intelligence inputs which said PWD officials and engineering department officials of local bodies are involved in malpractices.

Moreover, Kerala High Court had directed the state government to fill potholes within a week’s time. It also directed the government machinery to ensure whether activities are supervised properly.

The citizens also took to social media to raise the poor condition of repaired roads.

Meanwhile, commenting over the surprise raids, PWD minister PA Muhammad Riyas welcomed the move and said that checks should happen and action should be taken if there are any violations.
