Migrant labourers of Kitex wreak havoc in Ernakulam; several policemen injured


The policemen who intervened to solve the problem were beaten up by a group of workers. Several policemen, including the Kunnathunadu CI, were seriously injured. Stones were hurled at the vehicles causing damage to the vehicles.

Kochi: Violence broke out in the area inhabited by migrant labourers in Kizhakkambalam here. The clashes that erupted at around midnight in the camp where the labourers were staying got out of hand and caused much nuisance to the police and locals.

The incident happened in the camp where the labourers of Kitex company were staying. The workers set fire to a police jeep and several people were injured in the clashes. The accused were later arrested by the police and removed from the scene.

Clashes broke out between workers during the Christmas celebration. The policemen who intervened to solve the problem were beaten up by a group of labourers. Four policemen including the ASI were injured in the attacks. Kunnathunadu CI was also seriously injured.

Stones were hurled at the vehicles causing damage to the vehicles. Two vehicles were attacked out of which one was set on fire and completely burnt out. The keys to other police vehicles were taken away. They also hurled stones at locals who reached the spot.

Police said that the clashes started after the labourers engaged in verbal fight after getting drunk. Almost 500 policemen under the leadership of Aluva Rural SP Karthik reached the spot to handle the situation. The accused were arrested by around 4 in the morning.
