Kochi: Police can mislead the judiciary, retired DGP R Sreelekha said. Police 'shape' cases before bringing them to court, she said while releasing a law book here.

"People still trust the judiciary. But it is not what we see in the films. I had to look away from many things during my career of 33 years. I am still unable to understand why police say they have to shape cases before taking them to the court. Are they supposed to do that," she asked.

It is very easy to tamper with the forensic report, she said. Her repeated calls for independence of forensic science laboratory fell on deaf ears, she added. No police officer will accept mistakes. They will go to any extent to justify it. Besides, external pressures force police to frame cases and shape them, the first woman IPS officer from the state said.

Sreelekha also said that the officers influence the media as well. To influence the judiciary, they tell their versions of the story through media, she said.
