Thrissur: A team of cops seized e-cigarettes worth Rs 75,000 from a duty-paid shop and tattoo centre here. A raid jointly carried out by officials from East Police, West Police and the anti-narcotic wing of Thrissur City Police unearthed the illegal cigarettes.
The police intervention was based on the rampant complaints raised by the parents in the area. It is reported that parents came with complaints after finding e-cigarette packets in bags of their children.
According to experts, these e-cigarettes contain high levels of nicotine and prolonged use is no less harmful than cigarettes. Also, e-cigarettes are banned in the country and possession can invite one-year imprisonment and a fine up to Rs 1 lakh.
However, many use it as a ‘solution’ to keep away from other substance addictions. Police officials observe the use of e-cigarettes as an entry ticket to the world of addictive substances like ganja and MDMA.
Bus stands, railway stations and hotels will be under the scanner, said an official.
