Police nab woman from well-to-do family for robbing gold chains from shop in Munnar

Munnar: A tourist expertly robbed gold chains worth Rs 2 lakh from a jewellery shop in Munnar and was nabbed by police from a flat in Tamil Nadu.

Munnar police also seized two gold chains weighing 38 grams during the arrest of Rahana Hussain Farooq (47) from an expensive flat in Chennai. District Police Chief VU Kuriakose said the woman was on vacation in Munnar with her family and returned home after robbing the jewellery without the knowledge of other family members. It is learned that Rahana is from a wealthy family.

The gold chains were robbed from Ideal Jewellery on GH Road on July 16. She told the jewellery staff that she is a Coimbatore native and settled in Malaysia. She bought three earrings and a bracelet for Rs 78,000. She paid this money in full and gave advance for another piece of jewellery. She said she would come back in the evening with her husband to buy them.

Later during the night, the staff found two gold chains missing. CCTV footage revealed that the woman had stolen the chains.

The police were informed about the robbery and subsequent information coupled with CCTV footage revealed that the woman left Munnar in a Tamil Nadu registered van. Following the lead, Rahana was nabbed from Chennai. She was produced before Devikulam court and remanded.
