Kannur: Police have arrested a man for setting three vehicles on fire near Valapattanam Police Station on Tuesday morning.
Chandy Shameem, facing charges under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA), was nabbed hours after three vehicles seized by police in various cases, was found destroyed in fire in the wee hours on Tuesday.
Following the incident, police launched a search and found him hiding in a building three kilometres away from the police station. Shameem tried to force his way out when police tried to escort him out of the building. He alleged that police assaulted him and forcefully pulled his beard.
The previous day, Shameem and his brother created a ruckus at the police station and assaulted a police officer. He was furious with the police for keeping a tab over him after he was charged under KAAPA. On Monday, he approached the station and assaulted a police officer.
He fled from the police station soon after the incident. The officers took Shameem's brother and their jeep into custody. The vehicles were set on fire hours after the incident happened.
