Kochi: Kitex MD Sabu Jacob has raised a sharp criticism against the police alleging that innocent people were taken into custody over violence in Kizhakkambalam. Addressing the media here on Monday, Sabu stated that among the 164 in custody only 13 are accused in the case.

“Police is trying to cheat the public by making innocent people as accused in the case. 151 people in police custody have no links with the violence,” he added.

He also expressed deep regret over the incident linked with Kitex.

“Though the incident was a coincidence, police should investigate the reason behind it. Police claim that they have taken 164 people in custody and all are behind the violence. Among them, we have identified 152 people. But we don’t have any idea about 12 others,” said Sabu Jacob.

“ A total of 964 workers are staying in 12 line quarters. Among them, 499 are Malayalis and others are migrant workers. Police nabbed the accused from 3 quarters. Interestingly, the police only arrested migrant workers by avoiding Malayalis in the quarters. How did police confirm they are involved in the violence within 2 hours?,” asked the Kitex MD.
He slammed the police for targeting the migrant workers.

At the same time, he declared that Kitex will not protect any criminals.

On Saturday night, Christmas day celebrations by migrant labourers from the northeast part of India at Kizhakkambalam turned violent, leading to several policemen being brutally assaulted and two police jeeps badly damaged, with one set on fire.Eight policemen, including a Circle Inspector, were injured in the violence and subsequently, police lodged two cases -- one for the assault on the officers which also includes attempt to murder charges and the other for destruction of property.
