Malappuram: A man was arrested from Karipur Airport while trying to smuggle 995 grams of gold by hiding it as small capsules inside the body. The arrested individual is Abdul Gafoor (32), a Mukkam native.

The incident happened on Tuesday morning after police received a tip-off that gold was being smuggled through the airport. Gafoor, who arrived from Jeddah, was stopped by police while leaving the airport after customs clearance. He was immediately questioned but denied smuggling any gold. Even though police failed to find anything suspicious during the initial assessment, a medical test conducted in a private hospital revealed the presence of four capsules inside his stomach.

Police officials said that in the last several months, around 58 cases were registered in connection with gold smuggling through Karipur airport.
