POCSO: 83-year-old priest sentenced to 45 years RI for abusing 3-year-old girl in EKM

Kochi: The Ernakulam Principal POCSO Court sentenced a 83-year-old temple priest to 45 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 80,000 for sexually abusing a three-and-half-year-old girl in Kochi.

The accused has been identified as Purushothaman, a native of Udayamperoor. The sentence was passed by POCSO court judge K Soman.

The incident pertaining to the case took place in 2019-2020. As per reports, the accused, who worked as a temple priest, gave sugar candy and raisins to the girl and abused her.

The girl’s parents, who observed changes in her behaviour, inquired about the incident in detail and later lodged a complaint with the Udayamperoor police.

Following this, a POCSO case was registered and Purushothaman was arrested. The court also found that he is an accused in around 10 cases and ordered to give the fine amount to the girl.

The chargesheet of the case was filed by Thrikkakara assistant commissioner KM Jijimon. Special prosecutor PA Bindu and advocate Sarun Mankara appeared for the prosecution.
