PMA Salam | Mathrubhumi
Malappuram: PMA Salam is likely to be re-elected as general secretary of the Kerala faction of the Indian Union Muslim League. The final decision will be taken at the state committee meeting of the party on Saturday at League House in Kozhikode. It is learnt that all district committees except Kozhikode support Salam for the post.
Ahead of the election of state office-bearers, state president Panakkad Sayyid Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal met district committee presidents and general secretaries to get their opinions.
Kozhikode district committee proposed MK Muneer, MLA, as state general secretary. The remaining district committees recommended another term for Salam, it is learnt. Leaders KM Shaji and PM Sadiq Ali proposed MLA PK Kunhalikutty. If he is unwilling, the party should consider Muneer, they said.
Salam was given the charge of state general secretary following KPA Majeed’s election to the state Assembly in 2021. Though Salam was not widely accepted among a section of leaders, the general feeling is that he managed organisational activities like membership distribution competently. Sadiq Ali Thangal is also happy with Salam.
The state council will replace the high-power committee with the state secretariat. Following allegations that a group of leaders' high-power committee has no legal validity, the decision was taken in 2021.
The state secretariat which will include 21 members will have 10 office bearers. The state working committee is 75-members strong. Number of state office bearers is set at 19.
